It’s okay to lose once in a while

I was reading updates of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games on the Internet when I couldn’t help but think of our Malaysian atheletes who are competing in the tournament. Earlier today, I had read about how our gold medal hope in the women’s squash category was snuffed out by Nicol David’s defeat to her Australian nemesis Natalie Grinham.

I just want to say that it’s okay to lose once in a while, that you just can’t simply keep on winning and winning. We know that Nicol had given her all in that pulsating match so we shouldn’t really be disappointed by how she has failed to win a medal and further glory for the country. We should be proud that we had such a strong fighter who never gives up unlike other athletes who just gave up halfway and let their opponents trample all over them.

Winning 1 gold medal, 2 silvers and 4 bronzes is a good tally and though it is below the expectations of the country, we should be realistic and understand that Malaysia still has a long, long way to go before we can emerge as a force to be reckoned with in international sports. After all, during the opening ceremony, our country was introduced as the “Badminton Country”!

That being sad, I am looking forward to another outstanding performance by young Malaysian “tiger”, our pint-sized, highly talented diver Bryan Nickson Lomas in the diving competition. If you’re reading this, Bryan, know that someone’s cheering you all the way here at home!
