Rain, Thunder & Lighting…

It’s been raining extremely heavy for the last four days and today is no exception. Pahang is already experiencing one of the worst floods it has seen in years. Rarely has it rained this heavily before, according to my mother, who said that usually after Chinese New Year, the weather ought to be a little more sunny. Looks like times has changed.

Certainly, the December 2004 earthquake and tsunami has caused major changes to the Earth’s weather system, which would probably explain the heavy snow in Russia and also in New York. The floods, however, has always been an ever present danger in our country. Who could forget last year’s major flooding in the Northern states of Perlis, Kedah and some parts of Penang and Perak. Kelantan, Terengganu and even Sabah were not spared either.

What can we do in light of such natural disasters? Obviously, the problem lies in the irrigation and drainage system. Clogged drains are a major headache for city councils in the country who has warned the apathetic public numerous times not to dump their rubbish in drains, rivers and lakes. Do we need to make the drains and rivers deeper to accommodate the water flow intake? That is one ideal solution but where is the money going to come from? The taxpayers will have to be the ones to fork it out.

Anyways, the rain IS pelting heavily and I am really beginning to slightly unnerved by the lighting and thunder outside. Better get off now. How I long for the bright sunny days.

How ironic it is that when we suffered from the haze and the sun last year that we so desperately wanted the rain to fall! Now it is the reverse…

Such is life…we humans are constantly at the mercy of God’s little temper tantrums…
