Tribute to a Great American – The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In honour of the late Coretta Scott King, who was laid to rest on Tuesday, I would like to share one of her famous husband’s – the indomitable Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. – many quotes. He may be famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech, even now it is still one of the most inspirational speeches ever, but the quote below serves as a timely reminder and inspiration to all of us to give our utmost best in everything that we do, no matter how insignificant it may seem and regardless of whether we will ever gain recognition for it.

Indeed, The Kings are one of the world’s most decorated freedom and civil rights fighter through the means of peace and non-violence protests. That simply puts him in same company with Mahatma Gandhi, the pioneer of the non-violence movement.

The quote:

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” – Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., American civil rights activist/pioneer (1928 – 1968)

And before I stop, let me highlight the one person in Malaysia who is exemplary in his contribution to the people and one that really would do King proud – Panjang, Malaysia’s pot-hole repairer extraordinaire. Indeed, here lived a great pot-hole filler who did his job well!

Indeed, as Martin Luther King, Jr ranks in the Top 10 Famous People I Most Admired in the World, Panjang makes it to my Top 10 Inspirational Ordinary People in Malaysia.

God knows that we need more people like the Kings and Panjang in our lives today and not some rubbish, egotistical, greedy, war-mongering presidents. The world will certainly be a much more happier, peaceful place to live in if there were. Rather than hoping for someone to come and inspire change and stir things up, why don’t we strive to emulate their achievements ourselves? If we look deep within ourselves, I know we can draw strength and courage to be a visionary world-changer!

So, are you up for the challenge? I know I am.

Seriously, I pray that everyone will look to achieve higher things than themselves rather than mope and groan about their stationary miserable life or succumb to insecurity and fear, lashing out to hurt others.

    Hurray for inspirational people!!!
